July House Project NotesDeciding on ColorsWhen we traveled to Colorado in June one of our big tasks was to select the colors, tile and other finishes for the interior and exterior of the house. I'm finally getting around to documenting our selections.
Exterior ColorsTo help us decide on exterior colors we took two sample rocks that were representative of the rocks used in the foundation. It must have looked strange but we'd run outside with color chips and put them and the rocks in full sun to decide on colors. Our builder recommends Sherwin Williams paints so we selected colors from their choices. The siding will be Colony Buff and the trim will be Shingle Brown. The siding for the house will be a wood cement composite from James Hardie called HardiPanel. The pattern is made to look like vertical wood siding but it is fire proof and resistant to rot and termites. This should be a nice durable siding. It can be painted like regular wood siding. Our original plan was to replace the original blue metal roof with a new blue metal roof. Our architect disagreed, rather strongly, "Blue is a very invasive color, the bindweed of all colors, its' dissonance can be observed from miles away. It is not appropriate for this or any other house roof or wall areas." Because Paul has had so many good ideas and because we were not wedded to the blue color we decide to accept his viewpoint and choose a less obtrusive color. We finally selected a Light Stone for the roof and fascia. The soffits will be white. Here is a picture where I applied the siding color to the pattern and added the roof and trim colors. I realize that all computer screens will show the colors differently, there is no way to make them accurate for all viewers but at least it gives you an idea of the colors we will be using.

Kitchen ColorsWe spent hours going to all the tile shops in Grand Junction. We finally settled on most of the choices but the tile for the entry and pantry and downstairs bathroom had to wait until the next day. Our kitchen cabinets are in natural finish Maple. We selected a nice tile for the backspash behind the sink. We special ordered some of these tiles with drawings of herb plants on them which will be scattered in the backsplash. All of our countertops will be Corian material. The color is a grey speckled one from their Sierra family called Eclipse. It picks up the grey in the tiles. This will also form the backsplash behind the stove for ease of cleaning. We have one section of the center island that will be granite. We selected a stone with much more red as well as the greys in it to contrast with the regular countertops. Unfortunately I was unable to get a sample to scan to show the color. Here are the kitchen colors.

Upstairs Bathroom ColorsOur main floor upstairs is the pine that is already there. It will be refinished and sealed in a natural color. We decided to put vinyl flooring in the bathroom for ease of cleaning and waterproofing. The pattern is a nice one but our sample only shows 1/4 of the pattern. Imagine it duplicated in four sections making diagonal lines. The bathroom countertop is also Corian, same Sierra family as the kitchen but the color is Mojave. We elected to have an integral Corian sink in Bone instead of a regular sink. This should be easier to keep clean. The tub is an oyster color but we didn't get any samples. Surrounding the tub will be a cream and brown tile. Since the toilet is in a separate room from the bathroom we elected to go with standard white for the toilet fixture. Here are the upstairs bathroom colors.

Entry and Pantry TileThe downstairs bathroom includes a show and toilet and small corner sink. The shower is going to be made of recycled redwood. Our original plan was to have the entry, pantry and downstairs bath all done in the same pattern with wood and tile combined, large 17 inch tiles set with a strip of the oak flooring between them. We looked for the whole day but couldn't find an entry tile that we really liked that was affordable. After deciding to wait on that we talked about it over dinner. Our decision was to go with the nice expensive tile we found only in the entry and to select a more affordable plain tile for the pantry and downstairs bath. The next day we returned to the store and picked them out. We did not get a sample of the pantry tile, it's a plain cream with a slight texture but here is a picture of the entry tile. It's got grey, brown and red highlights and looks great with the rocks of the foundation and against plain natural oak flooring. All the rest of the downstairs flooring will be white oak finished natural color. The entry will have an oak board between each large 17 inch square tile.
