April 2003Al the hop vines survived the winter and sprouted. The mulched vines seem to be in better overall shape and are growing faster than unmulched ones.Individual Plant Picures Here is the gallery of pictures of all the plants on 25 April 2003.

Early Spring Grazing As part of the test we wanted to see if our sheep will eat the vines. We grazed the plot early because if the vines were chewed it would not matter. Unforunately while it is not a preferred food item, sheep will eat the hop vines. This means that our idea of using them to provide shade for the sheep in summer will not work unless we can adapt the trellis structure to prevent sheep from gaining access to the actual vines.
