Sewing and Quilting

I have learned to sew and here I am in my first project. A tunic and chemise from the late 13th century or early 14th century, depending on location.

I am also now quilting. Here are pictures of my first quilt, an "Around the World" pattern made from reproduction 1930's fabrics.

Knitting

I am a beginner knitter but here are a few of my projects. I'm finally good enough to try working with the wool from our own sheep!.

Weaving

Ken bought me a big floor loom for my birthday several years ago. I've woven three rugs, a blanket throw and several throw pillow covers. I'm currently working on yardage from Black Welsh yarn for a cloak. I've been spinning yarn for a re-creation of some medieval garments that will be next. I've now also added a smaller table loom and have done a scarf on it so far, Weaving is a lot of fun, sometimes I can't decide whether to knit, weave or spin!.

The Garden

I am not sure that I am ever meant to have a big regular garden! Seems like something goes wrong nearly every year. Ah well maybe practice will make perfect.

For 2003 I again tried to plant a small garden. I planted peas, corn, melons and sunflowers. So far the only thing that has sprouted is the peas, but the sheep managed to get their noses thru the fence and ate all the plants. Somehow I suspect we won't get any peas this year. Nothing else has sprouted. End of the season and we got nothing!

2002 Garden was again just grass and trees. The severe drought made attempting one impossible.

Now in Colorado in 2001 my garden consists of the apple, pear and apricots. I am also growing grass for the sheep to eat. Maybe next year I'll have time again to have a small vegetable garden.

For 2000 I decide to not bother as we were dealing with the Colorado house project and moving.

I tried again for 1999. This time all the planting beds were completely surrounded on all sides even the bottom with chicken wire. Unfortunately rabbits got in and ate everything that managed to sprout. We did harvest some lettuce and a few carrots but nothing else in 1999.

I had a few herbs and tomatoes growing in 1998 but gophers got nearly everything else.

I planted a small garden in 1997. The most successful thing I've grown has been hot chile peppers grown in cracked water tubs. Too bad I can't eat very much hot food! At least Ken enjoys them.

Cooking

I like to cook and have been experimenting with ways to cook lamb and mutton. Here are a couple of my recipes.

    Genealogy

I took the genealogy stuff off-line while I correct mistakes and clean up the data. Look for it late to mid-summer 2004.

    Our Cats

We have three inside cats, all are retired barn cats who stay indoors all the time. All of our cats are tamed ferals. Our outdoor barn cat Lewis succumbed to old age this winter, but a new barn cat has shown up and we are working to tame him and get him in to the vet for neutering and shots.

    Desert Trips

Here are pictures from our trip into the Anza Borrego desert in February 1998 to test some systems in our hummer. We had a great time and it was good shakedown cruise for the truck.

Ken and I traveled to Arizona for a week long Rock Art Recording Field School sponsored by the Arizona Archeological Society in June 1999. Here is a short article about rock art and some pictures from our trip.

Note:All of the trip links have lots of pictures at high resolution so be prepared for a fairly long download time.
