We did Optimal Livestock ram breeding soundness testing this month. Of the 29 rams we tested, two came back unsatisfactory, three came back questionable, and the rest were satisfactory. The unsatisfactory ones will go to slaughter, and the questionable ones will be retested once the weather cools off. The others will either join our breeding program or will head to the Hill Sheep Show in Manistique to be shown and sold.
We also evaluated our ewes, and fortunately, they all passed. We currently have 20 ewes for sale. Their details – including evaluation data and pedigrees – are on the Black Welsh website for members to access. If you are not a current member, please feel free to reach out to us for the data.
Yearling ewes are $275 each, 2-3 year old ewes are $300 each, and older ewes are $250 each. All rams are $350 each. Health certificates and testing are extra. Any sheep going to the Hill Sheep Show will have an additional $265 fee per sheep to cover vet work, inspections, and transportation.
