  • Sheep, at the Border

    ,

I have secondhand news that the sheep have arrived at the border. Lois is not yet across, and there are very long lines in both directions. We’re not sure yet whether she’ll load up and try to come back later tonight, or whether she’ll stay overnight in MT with the sheep. Continue reading

  • Sheep, on the Road Again

    ,

As of 7 AM on Thursday morning, the sheep officially made it to Butte, MT, and are headed towards the border. They should arrive by 1 PM or so. Lois is meeting them at Sweetgrass and will hopefully be able to cross the border before the end of the day. Continue reading

  • Sheep, Stuck

    ,

As of this morning, the Canada-bound sheep are stuck in Bountiful, Utah, where the hauler has broken down with a blown transmission. Lois may be driving down to Utah to pick them up. We won’t know more until we hear whether the rebuilt transmission that was ordered arrives and gets installed. It looks like it… Continue reading

    Sheep, Shipped!

Some of you know that I’ve been working for several years to document and register all Canadian purebred Black Welsh Mountain sheep. Once things really started to get underway, I realized how critical they were genetically. They’re in a precarious situation in terms of numbers and bloodlines. About four years ago, I started working to… Continue reading

    Working at the Winery

Yesterday, Ken and I went up to Terror Creek Winery to help bottle wine. With the four of us, we can bottle nearly 40 cases in just a few hours if everything’s set up. Terror Creek makes wonderful wine. We helped bottle Chalet, a red table wine, yesterday. Joan makes the most wonderful Pinot Noir,… Continue reading

    New Loom

Erika came up from Albuquerque to teach a naalbinding class to members of the North Fork Fiber Guild (NF2G) and brought my new loom up from Santa Fe. As she said, “All those years playing Tetris have finally paid off.” She managed to get a Glimakra 4 shaft, 60″ wide countermarche loom into her van… Continue reading

Off to the Wool Festival (And Bears)

I’m heading out today to attend part of the Taos Wool Festival. I’m taking my second revision of a Monmouth cap, plus the start of a scarf from a chart that I’m having issues with, in hopes that I can get some help from friends there. Some of my knitting friends will fortunately be attending.… Continue reading

    More on Sorting Sheep

Yesterday, we gave all the ewe lambs their second shots. All of them were evaluated. I managed to get coats on most of them, but I still need to make 11 more coats, as I ran out of some sizes. The uncoated sheep went back to the orchard on pasture, while the rest are here… Continue reading

  • Wine, Mutton, and Cheese

    , , ,

This past weekend, the three main agricultural businesses on our mesa held a wine, cheese, and mutton tasting. Our farm had slow-cooked mutton shoulder roasts and two Welsh cheeses to taste. Terror Creek Winery brought lovely fondue to go with their Swiss-style wines. Stone Cottage Cellars had a selection of cheeses paired with their wines,… Continue reading
