Early July, Hot and Dry

, , , , , ,

Grazing continues, and we are on our second round of grazing the main pastures. So far, our irrigation water has been good, but there’s no snow on Mt. Lamborn. As the old saying goes, if there’s still snow on Lamborn by the 4th of July, it’ll be a good year for water. It’s not going to be a great water year by the looks of things, but so far, we’re doing ok. It’s been really hot and dry with no rain at all. The few storm cells that have come through have been thunderstorms, which carry an increased risk of fire. There was one small fire started by a lightning strike on our mesa, but it was spotted, called in, and dealt with immediately. All of our neighbors are good about checking for smoke or fire and calling each other if we see anything.

The lambs are all growing very well. We weighed all of them when we vaccinated, and I should be getting EBV results back soon. They’re being analyzed in Australia.

We weaned our lambs born to AI early this year. They’ll be our test sheep for EID tags. They’re all rams, and they’re starting to act a bit precocious. We don’t need any more “oops” lambs like Sooner!

The Fourth of July is our local Cherry Days festival. We’ll be serving Revolution Brewing root beer and cherry soda ice cream floats as a fundraiser for the North Fork Historical Society. This’ll be on the Fourth at the museums. Stop by for a float and some handmade cookies from 1-4 PM.

Stay cool out there!
