I guess this pile of wood shavings mulch makes a great bed/lookout area! Continue reading

The spare sheep has settled right in here at Desert Weyr. He hardly even moves now when we go outside. He’s eating the hay meant for the horses and donkey, and we’ve had to move sheep away from where he hangs out. I sure wish he’d move on to someplace else. The newest batch of… Continue reading

We had a spare sheep today – a Rocky Mountain Big Horn ram. A young one, too, by the look of the horns. He was in the grazing pen with our sheep. We scooted ours back into the corrals and took down the fencing so he could escape. That’s the end of grazing the front… Continue reading

On June 6th, there was fresh snow on Mt. Lamborn. I even got a picture this time. Over the last day or so, we’ve gotten almost half an inch of rain, and the Grand Mesa got four inches of fresh snow. The rains will be really good for establishing our pastures. Today was also chicken… Continue reading

The farm passed a major milestone today. This old travel trailer has been here for at least ten years. It was used as a temporary guest house on occasion, and Oogie stayed in it when she first got here in fall 2000 with the sheep. It was not in great shape – wasps had started… Continue reading

Well, we thought spring was coming. The snow had melted, and things were starting to green up. The grass was just getting going, and the guard dogs looked ready to start their lamb-protection work. Then, we got this! More snow, which led to more mud when it melted the next day. Last year, we had… Continue reading

The geese are out in the small pen beside the barn during the day, and we’ve gotten our first goose eggs. We’re pulling the eggs from the geese to sell as eating eggs until we decide whether we want goslings. We still don’t have a slaughter facility that can handle plucking. We can process them… Continue reading

Construction is proceeding at a rapid pace. The rest of the windows and doors were installed today. The stairs were also roughed in, and we can easily get up and down to appreciate the views from the second floor. I definitely prefer going up the stairs in comparison to the ladder! The siding’s been delivered,… Continue reading

It’s Christmas day, and we’ve got a white Christmas for sure. The little rams are enjoying the snow. We also got a visit from the Christmas turkeys. They are a lot bigger than when we saw them last. Winnie and Becky are doing well guarding the perimeter of the pens. Continue reading

Thanks to the combination of construction and snow, all the chickens are being kept in their house this winter. To keep them happy, we give them lots of treats, food scraps, stale bread, vegetable pieces, and other bits of food. We have several breeds of laying hens, including Rose Comb Brown Leghorns, Golden Penciled Hamburgs,… Continue reading
